Schoonspruit in record FNB win

Match Report

In their FNB Clash in Malmesbury on Saturday Schoonspruit beat Wesbank 36-10, a record score for this derby.

Schoonspruit went into the match as overwhelming favourites and lived up to their top billing, scoring six tries to one.

Schoonspruit were dominant in all phases of play on a field that was heavy after the downpour of Friday night. Mercifully the sun came out early and the day was pleasant.

The match began at a great tempo. Inside the first five minutes Schoonspruit forced a scrum just out side the Wesbank 22. The scrumhalf Henrico Boois broke blind and the right wing Lendell Mitchels finished off by scoring the try. Prop Johny Esselaar converted.

About two minutes later Wilfred Owies, the Schoonspruit flyhalf, knocked on in his own 22. Wesbank footed through and flyhalf Juwell Samuels fell on the ball for a try, which he converted. 7-7.

The scoring slowed down after that. Fifteen minutes later a full line movement saw Schoonspruit's outside centre Donovan Williams go over for a try. 12-7.

When Samuels kicked a penalty goal the score was 12-10 and, unlikely as it seemed, Wesbank were in the game. But just before half-time Schoonspruit attacked from their own 22 and after great interplay between backs and forwards eighthman Gernick Peters rounded off the movement with a try which Esselaar converted. This brought the half-time score to 19-10 to Schoonspruit.

After half-time there was just one team on the field as Schoonspruit made all the play. Overeagerness and good Wesbank defence kept Schoonspruit out  rill the pressure told.

Boois charged down a kick and scored. Owies converted. 26-10.

Wesbank tried to run from their own line but Schoonspruit flank Ryno Lategan intercepted and scored a desperately easy try. 31-10.

The match ended with a good backline movement which Williams ended with a try.
