Schoonspruit, Wesbank in FNB Classic Clash

Match Preview

Schoonspruit and Wesbank, both keen rugby schools in Malmesbury, meet in an FNB Classic Clash on Saturday afternoon.

Some 10 000 spectators are expected at Wesbank Sportsgrounds for the match. The derby between the two schools, this year an FNB Classic Clash for the first time, came into being in 1999, and Schoonspruit has dominated it. In fact Wesbank have won only once.

Schoonspruit again have an excellent record this year. They have won 11 of their 12 matches with just one draw – against the strong Piketberg side. They are one of the strongest school sides in the Boland with all the benefits of a boarding hostel. Amongst their scalps are Swartland, Bonnievale and Bergrivier.

Schoonspruit have two players who went to Craven Week this year – Rayno Papier and Ashwill Rentz – and Wilfred Owies who went to the Academy Week. Scrumhalf Hendrico Boois went to the Grant Khomo Week.

Enrico Franse of Wesbank and Fergie Thompson of Schoonspruit were each coaches of a Boland team – there were two – at the Grant Khomo Week.

The odds again seem on a Schoonspruit victory.
