Second-half blitz sinks SACS

A powerful second-half display in which hosts Rondebosch Boys' High scored five tries saw them secure what, in the end, was a comfortable win over SACS. The final score was 41-18 to Rondebosch after SACS had led 10-6 at the interval.

SACS started the better of the two teams and controlled territory and possession for the first half. Rondebosch showed brief glimpses of flair but SACS scored the first try of the game when wing Aidan Deary went over and flyhalf Shane Fourie converted from the corner. Rondebosh struck a penalty through their flyhalf Tyren Lee soon after before Fourie again extended SACS’s lead. SACS should have scored more points in the first half but sloppy passing cost them. Rondebosch narrowed the lead to four points before the break as Lee struck a penalty on the stroke of halftime.

Two converted tries in two minutes straight after the interval meant SACS went from four points ahead to ten points in arrears and in was always going to be uphill for SACS from there as the hosts had their tails up. SACS’s defence, which had been so good the week before, was exposed around the fringes and then out wide by a determined Rondebosch team.

First Rondebosch captain and inside-centre Ronnie Melck broke the line and waltzed over and then flank Robert Jankielsohn broke blind off the back of a maul and again caught the SACS defence napping. Shane Fourie brought SACS back into the game with an intercept try and a penalty to make the score 20-18.

Just as SACS looked as if they might make a fist of their fightback poor defence allowed Graham Geldenhuys to score virtually untouched off the back of a scrum on the SACS 22-metre line. SACS came close to narrowing the gap to two points again when centre Richard Rodgers burst through from a set move close to the Rondebosch line but the referee ruled he had dotted the ball just short of the line.

From there Rondebosch kicked on and capitalised with two opportunist tries as SACS chased the game, wing Nic le Roux doing the damage on both occasions. Rondebosch were deserved winners on the day. They drove hard at SACS around the fringes and sucked in the SACS defence before unleashing their big ball-carriers like Geldenhuys and Melck into space, forcing SACS to make one-on-one tackles against their big men, which ultimately they failed to do.
