Special Paarl Gim Too Powerful
The South African College High School (SACS) hosted Paarl Gimnasium on a cold winter’s morning in Newlands. SACS gave their all but Paarl Gim are not the top ranked school in the country for nothing and they were ruthless in their execution when in possession and ran out 55-3 winners.
SACS started well and took the game to Gim, earning a penalty which Shane Fourie converted after five minutes. SACS dominated possession and territory in the first half but Gim scored two tries from SACS mistakes., one a dropped pass which centre JD du Toit snapped up and ran in for a try. Their second try came from a lost lineout by SACS on the half-way line which Gim worked through a few phases before spinning the ball wide to left-wing Dylon Fairbridge, who went over near the corner. Fullback Grant Hermanus converted both tries and a penalty on the stroke of halftime to see the visitors go in leading 17-3.
Gim brought on their two SA Schools loose forwards at the interval and they started the second half like a house on fire. Rickius Bothma and Jacques Vermeulen coming around the corner with clear intent, forcing SACS to commit three or four tacklers to bring them down and consequently the space opened up out wide. SACS had their chances but were unable to convert any of their linebreaks into points. SACS also had kickable penalties which they turned down in an attempt to take the game to their opponents. Try as they might though SACS had no answer and Gim ran in six second-half tries to seal a comfortable win.
