St Andrew's win FNB Classic

Match Report

St Andrew's beat Graeme College 17-11 in a tense FNB Classic Clash in Grahamstown on Saturday.

St Andrew's centre Tiger Bax opened the scoring half way through the first half with a penalty making the score 3-0. Graeme hit straight back with a penalty of their own from flyhalf Lorenzo Southey.

St Andrew's wing Bradley Ford scored the first try of the match late in the first half, with Bax converting to give St Andrew's a 10-3 lead which they would not surrender for the rest of the match.  Graeme centre Bongi Vena scored their only try of the match just before half time – the score was 10-8 at the break.

Graeme dominated the second half in all departments, except on the scoreboard.  A dropped ball on the half-way line from Graeme was picked up by St Andrew's lock Matthew Dobrowski who showed impressive pace to out sprint the defence and score, giving his team a commanding 17-8 lead.

Graeme applied pressure for the rest of the match, but their only reward was another penalty from Southey to make the score 17-11.  St Andrew's spent the last five minutes desperately making tackle after tackle in order to avoid defeat.

St Andrew's deserved victory as they took their points scoring opportunities better than Graeme.
