St Andrews win historic match
Match report
Two leading rival schools in Grahamstown, St Andrew’s College and Kingswood College, faced each other for the 116th time in history in the highly anticipated St Andrew’s College/Kingswood Derby Day on 16 July. St Andrew's won 31-5.
Thousands of spectators lined the sides of Lower Field on the St Andrew’s campus. Amongst the crowd were over 750 old boys who had returned to the school to participate in its landmark 150th anniversary celebrations – the Jubilee 150 Reunion Weekend.
The pressure was on the College 1st XV team, who have enjoyed an exceptional season to date, with so many Old Andreans supporting them and expecting a win. The team did not disappoint and from the kick off St Andrew’s put pressure on the Kingswood 1st XV by making good use of the possession they had. The College 1st XV team played well disciplined rugby to be beat a highly motivated Kingswood side.
“Except for a ten to fifteen minute period in the second half when there was a lapse in concentration by the St Andrew’s team, College were able to dominate all facets of play and as a result had the majority of the possession. This was achieved mainly through well varied play, which had the committed Kingswood defense stretched most of the time,” said Harley Searle, Master-in-Charge of rugby at St Andrew’s.
By the time the whistle blew to signal the end of the first half St Andrew’s had crossed the line to score three times. Try scorers included Joshua Kibirige, Kyle Rennie and captain Chase Minnaar. Tiger Bax converted two of the tries and College were very much in command with a 19-0 lead.
In the second half St Andrew’s still managed to dominate play but were not able to round off any promising phases of play and it took a try by the Kingswood eigthth man, Nico Holthauzen, to jolt the College 1st XV back into top gear. Jeremy Dobrowsky and Dirk Westensee were able to score a further two tries (one converted by Tiger Bax) in the last ten minutes and as a result wrapped up a successful day of rugby with a convincing 31-5 win to St Andrew’s College.
Old Andreans were delighted with the win and celebrations continued way into the early hours of the morning. “The Jubilee 150 Reunion Weekend has been thoroughly enjoyable and College beating Kingswood is certainly the cherry on the top. We are very proud of our school and the win today was fantastic,” said old boy Anton Wienard.
