The Interschools

This is the day.  This is the big day. This is the day every new boy at Paarl Boys’ High and Paarl Gim dreams about – running onto to Faure Street Stadium amidst cheering and singing and scoring the winning try in Interschools.

That is every Paarl boy’s dream. It could come true on Saturday when the biggest Interschools match in the world is played. There will be over 20 000 people packed into the stadium for the climax of a week of tense activities in Paarl for the staff, boys and Old Boys of both schools, and indeed for the whole town where there will not be a soul that does not know that Interschools is happening and does not back a side.

Colour matters. It must be blue for Boys’ High and green for Gim. The ground is divided into two halves, one for Boys’ High and one for Gim. Even the colours of the programmes are significant.

In fact the separation before and afterwards is the down side of the occasion. This year Boys’ High are the hosts, which means they have the better choice of venues.

Rain is forecast. It will not dampen the enthusiasm.

Season So Far

There is not a significant difference between the performances of the two schools.

Boys’ High have lost three of their 12, Gim one of their 16. Boys’ High have more players in representative teams. Gim are ranked higher on the Schools Top 20 – second to Boys’ High’s sixth.
