The Stadium for Craven Week
The 2013 Craven Week matches will be played in the old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Pietersburg.
As stadiums go, it in bot all that old – built in 1976 and then named the Pietersburg Stadium. As is the case with much in the Limpopo Province, its name was changed to the Peter Mokaba Stadium, named for an ANC leader and member of parliament who died in 2002 at the age of 43.
The all-purpose stadium – once the home of a soccer club and possessed of an athletic track – has seating for about 15 000 spectators. It is smaller than the new Peter Mokaba Stadium built to its east for the 2010 soccer world cup.
When Pietersburg was identified as a venue for the world cup, thought was first given to demolishing the existing stadium and building on the site, but then it was decided to build another, the new, 45 000-seater Peter Mokaba Stadium on a site close by. Clearly the new stadium would lack the intimacy which the old stadium can provide. But the new stadium has fine facilities.
The stadium is about 5km from the centre of Polokwane.
