Tiere make Boishaai fight
At Brug Street in Paarl, the home team had to withstand a huge onslaught in the first half before subduing a committed Tygerberg 36-14 on Saturday.
The latter managed to disrupt the Boys' High rhythm with some excellent counter-rucking, as well as quality work on the ground. Louw Langevedt (flank) was superb in this regard, securing a number of turnovers. Juanro Augustus (No.8) also proved to be a strong ball-carrier and he also managed to score his sides only try in the half, from an interception. Nuggety scrumhalf Mark Weir gave a brave display, especially when his forwards came under pressure in the second half.
Paarl Boys' High held a narrow 10-7 lead at the break.
The Paarl outfit shifted gears in the second half after some stern words from coach Sean Erasmus. Their forwards won good metres on the drive and also dominated the line-outs. Christo Mostert (flank) and Carel van Zyl (hooker) were prominent in broken play. No wonder then that three of the Boys' High’s five tries were scored by the big men up front. Both burly props Quintin Vorster and Leo Kruger crashed over from close range, using their bulk and power. JC van Schalkwyk (replacement flank) also scored after some quality support play.
In the winners' backline Curtley Grain (outside centre) was once again the danger man. Paul de Wet (scrumhalf) was also full of running.
Paarl Boys' High have little time to rest as they have a heavy schedule ahead. On Tuesday they have to face Drostdy away in Worcester in the semifinal of Die Burger competition for large schools. Then on Saturday they have to travel to SACS.
