Tough Clash in Paarl
There was again a big crowd for an Interschools match at Faure Street Stadium in Paarl, some 12 000 spectators, for the passionate interschools clash between Klein Nederburg and New Orleans.
With their powerful pack, led by powerful eighthman Iver Aanhuizen, Klein Nederburg were favourites after three years of New Orleans rule, but New Orleans did not give up easily and led 8-7 at half-time.
In the first half fullback Garren Kulsen goaled a penalty and then Jade Adams, the side's strong captain and eighthman, tapped a penalty and scored a surprise try. That gave New Orleans an 8-0 lead.
Klein Nederburg were not to be denied and a try by right wing Erich Koopman was converted by Robin Hendricks to bring the score to 8-7.
The second half saw the dominance of the bigger Klein Nederburg forwards, led by their robust eighthman Iver Aanhuizen. But that was not before New Orleans had added to their lead through a thrilling try by Romano Collins who ended his run with a swanky dive. That made it 13-7 but it also signalled the end of New Orleans's scoring.
Klein Nederburg counterattacked from a poor kick and after the ball had gone quickly from hand to hand fullback Shadley Dazel scored under the posts. The conversion gave Klein Nederburg the lead for the first time in the match at 14-13.
Robin Hendricks took the score to 17-13 with a penalty and then right at the death replacement Curtley Fisher scored, to the delight of the Klein Nederburgers who rushed in glee onto the field so that it was some time before the field was cleared and the conversion could be taken. It was missed and the game was over.
Again expressions of joy and triumph broke out amongst the Klein Nederburg supporters but even the supporters of New Orleans acknowledged that it had been a great match on a great occasion.
