Maritzburg College beat Voortrekker 15-12 on Goldstone's and then beat Hilton 24-6 up at Hilton.

College scraped home in a real nail-biter. Voortrekker's record during the season made them a team to be respected and the anticipated close game could hardly have been closer.

Voortrekker had rather the better of the first half, but the break arrived with the score at 0-0 – both teams had squandered easy penalty kicks.

In the second half, the lead changed hands four times. Voortrekker scored two long-range tries, both the result of picking up a loose ball while College were on the attack. College scored two good tries themselves, moving the ball wide and creating space on the left. The difference between the teams was a long-range penalty, but Voortrekker, towards the end, spurned a kickable penalty in an attempt to win.

There was little to choose between the sides and the see-saw nature of the game made it an exciting spectacle.

College vs Hilton up at Hilton

A College team, much disrupted by injury, rose to the occasion in a display of courage and determination to beat the favoured Hilton team comfortably.

The College backline was patched together, with neither of the half-backs having played even for the Second XV in that position, and two other regulars missing, but the seams were not evident. The forwards won a good supply of the ball and drove well and the backs looked far more dangerous than their Hilton counterparts.

A converted try gave College a 7-3 half-time lead and two further second half tries, as College took a stranglehold on the game, were just reward for a fine effort against the odds. Hilton's only points were two penalties.
