Tygerberg well beaten by SACS

SACS led 34 points to seven at half time before running out comfortable 82-14 winners under the watchful eye of retired Test referee Jonathan Kaplan.

SACS opened the scoring as early as the second minute after a prolonged period of phase play through burly flank Liam Larkan. Wing Michael Ravenscroft went over for the first of his three tries soon after before Tygerberg struck back. A chip kick was fumbled by SACS and pounced upon by the visitors' fullback Tiaan Henecke who raced clear to score. He converted his own try to provide some respite for the “Tiere” but from then on it was one-way traffic as Larkan and hooker Lance Steytler combined often in midfield to telling effect and gave the hosts great momentum from which to strike wide. Ravenscroft got his hat-trick within the first half hour while on the other wing, debutant Michael Sutton, also cashed in with two tries.

Tygerberg’s tackling wasn’t good and they were often also caught too narrow on defence and it was simply too easy for SACS who began rolling on the substitutes soon after the interval. For Tygerberg scrumhalf Thandile Hoyi was a threat around the fringes and he often combined well with hard running captain Tiaan De Witt.

Tygerberg scored their second try via flank Tiaan Schonken from a rolling maul but it was scant consolation as SACS continued to cross their tryline at regular intervals. Another standout player for SACS on the day was scrumhalf Lucky Dlepu who was always in support of the ball-carrier. For his efforts he also scored two tries as did Larkan and Steytler.

SACS host another Northen Suburbs school next week in Brackenfell High but they will provide a stern test of SACS’s mettle having recently run the mighty Paarl Gim close in Paarl and this week coming off a commanding 43-7 win over DF Malan. Their confidence will be sky high and SACS are going to have to be at their best to beat them.
