U18 Girls: Four Teams unbeaten
In the SA Rugby Girls Under-18 Week, being played at Jeppe High School for Boys, four teams have now won each of their two matches -Border, Border Country Districts , Western Province and Eastern Province.
Western Province and Eastern Province have been honoured with the final day on the final day, Friday, 29 June 2018.
Border showed their fighting spirit from the outset against South Western Districts, and their continuous pressure paid off as they wore down the George team’s defence in the first half to take a 15-5 half-time lead before sealing the 20-5 victory thanks to their three tries.
Eastern Province produced a quality performance against Zimbabwe as their forwards and backs played their part to work the team onto the front-foot, and they earned the rewards with a 33-7 victory. Zimbabwe scored their only try of the match in the first half, while the Eastern Cape side kept the scoreboard ticking throughout to finish the match with five tries, four of which were converted.
Western Province were superior on attack and defence from the start against the Blue Bulls, and they did well to capitalise on their try-scoring chances throughout the match, which saw them cross the try-line an impressive eight times. Their defence was equally solid as they shut out the North Gauteng side completely to deny them a point.
The Pumas also delivered a solid performance against the Free State to win 47-20. They raced to a 28-0 lead, before a strong second-half fightback by the Bloemfontein side saw them score four times. They were unable to shut out the Mpumalanga outfit on defence, however, which saw them bolster their try tally to seven, with a brace by Patience Ngwane for their 47-20 victory.
Border Country Districts found their rhythm in the second half against Boland to secure a 26-12 victory following a tight first half in which each side only scored one try. Border’s three tries to one by Boland in the second half, however, nudged them ahead, as they showed patience on attack and backed their structures.
The Sharks retained possession and attacked at will against Limpopo, and their patience on attack paid off as they outscored their counterparts eight tries to two for a rewarding 44-10 victory, with Mbali Mbonambi earning a hat-trick and Thandiswa Mthembu a brace.
Hosts, the Golden Lions suffered their first defeat of the tournament as they went down 10-7 against Griquas in a tight tussle in which only three tries were scored. Griquas’ two tries to only one converted try by the home side, however, sealed the victory for them.
A hat-trick by Griffons prop Shoti Mohalali and flyhalf Pinkie Touto’s try and three conversions, meanwhile, were instrumental in their 36-24 victory against the Leopards, as the team outscored their central union neighbours six tries to four.
