Vermaak on the mark for Glenwood
Glenwood's fullback Corne Vermaak clinched a very narrow 17-15 win over Paarl Boys High on Saturday with a last minute penalty at the Wildeklawer Super Schools festival.
Within the first few minutes Paarl Boys’ was penalized for scrumming up, but Glenwood could not capitalise as fullback Corné Vermaak missed the kick.
A few minutes later Glenwood, once again, were awarded a penalty and Vermaak misses an easy kick.
Within ten minutes of the first half a well-struck tactical kick ahead by Paarl Boys sees wing Sparks Ngcobo not using his boot to find touch. The problem was compounded when Vermaak tried to kick to the long touchline and missed it badly. Paarl Boys’ used this opportunity and scored in the corner and the try was converted which put them in the lead 7-0.
Glenwood continued to enjoy the better share of the possession and territory but Paarl Boys did a good job of suffocating them with rapidly advancing defence. There were also a number of unforced errors in the game and the conditions became more difficult to play in.
Vermaak's day with the boot did not get any better after his side was awarded another penalty right in front of the posts on the 22-metre line. He, again, was unable to convert the points for Glenwood.
Going into half-time Paarl Boys’ sloted over their first penalty and went ahead 10-0.
Glenwood responded well after the half-time break. A high tackle penalty saw Glenwood set up an attacking lineout.
The men from Durban went wide and when Vermaak joined the line Paarl Boys try to go for intercept but Mcuma gathers the bounced ball and scores on the left side. Corné Vermaak converts the try to leave Glenwood three points behind.
Paarl Boys hit back after Glenwood's half-time revival and scores the side's second try to extend the point’s gap to eight points. This try is not converted.
Glenwood wins an offside’s penalty. They rumble it up after winning the attacking lineout and Kevin du Randt did really well to plant the ball over the line in the corner. Vermaak comes up with an excellent conversion and Paarl Boys lead 15-14.
Glenwood produced some huge defence to repel several big pick and drives by the big Paarl Boys forwards.
Glenwood wins a long range penalty after Paarl Boys’ infringes at the ruck while Glenwood were retreating. Vermaak who kicked well in the second half puts Glenwood into the lead kicking over a 45-metre penalty in the 55th minute, securing Glenwood’s 17-15 victory over Paarl Boys.
