Volkies host Blikkies
On Saturday Volkskool hosted Burgersdorp in Graaff-Reinet, the Gem of the Karroo, a happy occasion especially for Volkskool who won all but one of the five matches.
Traditionally South Africa’s rugby strength came from the platteland, with legends such as Os du Randt and Mannetjies Roux coming out of the rural areas to succeed on the world stage. Now that the Kings are part of the Super 15, attention is once again fixed on the small schools in farming communities to find the next superstar.
Volkskool Graaff-Reinet was host to Burgersdorp Hoërskool the weekend of the 13 April. Both primary and high schools took part in this annual clash – with the results being shared equally over the years.
The Under-19A match started at a ferocious pace for such an early season game and in the first 15 minutes the game was tight and even. Gradually however Volkskool started to get the upper hand and by half time they held a comfortable 24-7 lead. This lead they never relinquished and ended up 53-7 victors over Burgersdorp.
Incidentally Volkskool also launched its new mascot (die Kudu’tjie) at this game and with pompom girls, music, mascot and a large, vocal crowd the day was filled with fun and excitement.
