Wellington Classic Clash

On Saturday, Bergrivier and Weltevrede meet in an FNB Classic Clash in Wellington, two schools with great enthusiasm for their rugby and enjoying big and lively spectator support.

In fact this derby lasts the whole week, starting with a special church service on the Sunday morning at the Verenigde Reformeerde Kerk-Bergrivier, led by the Rev. D Slamet.

On Monday there is a school function at Bergrivier and on Tuesday the games begin with basketball and volleyball. The rugby starts at Pelican Park on Wednesday with primary school action. Thursday is netball and Friday in soccer. In some of these activities schoolteachers and past pupils take part, and school songs are sung.

Then comes Saturday and the rugby – at Newton Park this year instead of Boland Stadium.

It is a match one would expect Bergrivier to win handsomely. They have been having a good season with big wins over Emil Weder, Weston and Stellenbosch, a win over Langenhoven of Riversdale and defeats with honour at the hands of Schoonspruit and New Orleans.

Bergrivier have the only Boland representative in their side – scrumhalf Phill-Lee George who went to the Academy Week.
