West Dominates on Cape Day 2

The matches were played at Rondebosch Boys' High on a rain-less but crisp day on a well-worn field which carries the name of Tinkie Heyns, a Rondebosch and Western Province's legend. That it looked threadbare was hardly surprising after the recent rain and five matches on Saturday with another five on Monday.

Two of the matches produced comfortable wins but in each of the other three matches victory was by a point or two.

Stellenberg led Dale 22-0 at half-time and then did not score in the second half. Boland Landbou had the big win.

The other three matches were won by one, two and three points.

The second match of the day was a seesaw affair.

SACS led 10-0.

The scores were level at 10-10.

Grey led 13-10.

SACS led 15-13.

Grey led 18-15.

SACS scored a try and won 20-18.

SACS had won at the death against Selborne on Saturday and they repeated that feat on Monday. This time the scorer of the try that won the match was Declan O'Connor in the left corner. Just as it was a lock – Jean Minnaar – who scored the winning try against Selborne, so it was a the lock O'Connor who scored the winning try against Grey.

SACS score three tries to the two by Selborne who were hampered by a yellow card just before the end, just before O'Connor's try.

Wynberg had lost seven matches in succession but two tries, a conversion and two penalty goals gave them a 20-12 lead, before Selborne, a team with a much better record this season, fought back. The fighting was done with ball in hand – and excellent handling had been a feature of the cold day. Big lock Stephan Nieuwenhuizen stepped, broke and got a pass away to Jarrod Ramsay who was speeding into position on his right. Ramsay was over and around to the posts and it was 20-19 with little time to play.

Selborne attacked again and Wynberg tackled again and again.. But Selborne got into the Wynberg half where Wynberg were penalised at a tackle, 40 metres out but in front. To the kicker's despair, the kick was missed and Wynberg, for so long winless had beaten the team which not long ago beat great Grey College.

The last match also produced a close affair. It also took a late try to win the match, a spectacular try which started well inside thew Queen's half.

But then Queen's were always willing to run with the ball, regardless of where on the field they got the ball.

Rondebosch scored first when their red-haired eighthman Venter went over for the first of his two tries. But Queen's responded with a try by their eighthman which started in their own half when strong eighthman Siya Matanda started a counterattack from the left. They ran down the right and then came back wide left to Asi Malotana  who played inside to Matanda who juggled, caught and scored. He started and ended the try.

The next try came from a scrum just inside the Queen's half. They went right and then wide left where Enrique Oranje broke and gave Asi Malotana an easy run-in for the try in the left corner. 15-5 after 17 minutes.

Queen's suffered a yellow card and Rondebosch came back. Venter scored his second try and then a perfectly weighted diagonal kick by Rob Davis landed in the arms of Ross Roode, who scored, and Rondebosch led 19-15, the half-time score.

There was just one score in the second half, a try by energetic scrumhalf Edumisa Njumba. It started with a quick throw-in from touch on the Queen's 10-metre line. Malotana had a strong run down the left touchline and near the Rondebosch 22 passed infield to Njumba who wove his way infield at speed and scored under the posts. Kenan Richards converted.

There were still 25 minutes to play, 25 lively minutes, but scoreless. The match ended with Rondebosch attacking strongly.

The festival which Ray Connellan started in 1980 remains a thoroughly wholesome festival of rugby.
