Western Province Finish Powerfully
The tournament took place at Paarl Gim, starting on Friday and ending on Saturday.
The Pumas won the Plate Final, while Free State won the Bowl Final and KwaZulu-Natal the Shield Final.
Western Province booked their place in the final after registering a morale-boosting 29-0 victory in the semi over Western Cape neighbours, Boland, who had also ended Day 1 in a strong position.
Western Province had won the quarterfinal 46-0 against Griquas.
The other finalists, South Western Districts, beat the Blue Bulls 28-14 in the quarterfinal and the Golden Lions 21-15 in the semifinal.
It was an enteratining two days of rugby in which 296 tries and 1852 points were scored. Damian Willemse of Paul Roos, Western Province and SA Schools, was the highest points scorer in the tournament with 42 points, while his team-mate Muller du Plessis’s seven tries were the highest by a player.
In the Final South Western Districts actually scored first through a try by WP van Heerden, the Oakdale forward. But Western Province bounced back with a try by Wian van Zyl, who found space out wide, allowing them to level the scores. Vian Fourie and Khanya Ncusane added tries to make the half-time score 19-7.
The second half was all Western Province with more tries by Damian Willemse, Muller du Plessis, Charl Serdyn and Mike Mavovana.
In the Plate Final, the Pumas struck first against the Blue Bulls with a try by JC Pretorius, an SA Schools player from HTS Middelburg, and they added another a few minutes later compliments of Jaco Joubert to take a 12-0 lead. They were leading 24-0 when the Blue Bulls scored their only points, a try by Lincoln Daniel to which the Pumas answered with a try from the kick-off.
