Westville outgun Hilton
Match Report
Westville Boys’ High School’s 1st XV started their domestic rugby season on a very positive note. The local lads repeated last year’s 17-7 win over their Midlands opponents with an emphatic 35-3 victory on Saturday.
Playing in front a large Hilton crowd, Westville dominated all aspects of play. The first half was a tight affair, with Westville’s inside centre Clarence Gwala opening the scoring with a simple touchdown, after a scything break by talented young flyhalf Ntando Mabaso. Winger Cameron Innes then chased down a long ranging kick, succeeding in charging down the clearing kick and scoring just on the half-time break. Gwala converted both tries to take the half time score to 14-3.
The second half belonged to Westville’s forwards as they rampaged through their opponents, punching holes in the first lines of defence. Bullocking runs by Captain Marc Colia and flank Daniel Sinclair created acres of space for the Westville backs to strike at will. Fullback Gareth Jollands produced a scintillating series of runs, culminating in a well deserved try. Daniel Sinclair and No.8 Richard Scholtz rounded off the scoring with a try apiece. Gwala converted all three tries.
It must be said, however, that Hilton never gave up trying, showing the customary never-say-die attitude that supporters of schoolboy rugby have come to expect from the Midlands lads.
Westville don’t have much time to celebrate, as on Wednesday they leave for the Wynberg Boys’ Festival in Cape Town, where they will take on the hosts and Northern Cape High School.
All Old Boys are encouraged to mark on their calendars the next home game against Glenwood on the 6 May, kick-off at 15.00 on Bowdens 1.
