Wildeklawer: Fixtures & referees

By Paul Dobson
Thursday 24 Apr 2014

There is a public holiday on Monday, 28 April, to celebrate Freedom Day on 27 April, and on that Monday the tough Wildeklawer Tournament starts at Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley, a young tournament that seems to have been around forever and enjoys great prestige.

There are 20 teams taking part. There is the Wildeklawer XV, which has been chosen after trials from a group of strong rugby schools – New Orleans, Klein Nederburg who did well at the St John's Easter Festival, Bellville South, Groendal, Kasselsvlei, Excelsior, George High, Schoonspruit of Malmesbury and Weston.

Of the 19 other teams the following are in the FNB Top 20 this week: 1. Grey Bloem (1), Glenwood (4), Monument (5), HTS Middelburg (6), Dr EG Jansen (7), Selborne (9), Waterkloof (10), Grey PE (11), Paarl Gim (12), Oakdale (15), Affies (16), Maritzburg College (17) and Outeniqua (18). In other words it is a tournament of top quality.

SA Referees appoints the match officials to the tournament which is a great opportunity for young referees as top assessors watch them and Mark Lawrence is there to coach them.
