WP Win Again
At the end of the first half, the score was 0-0 after Free State had missed three penalty kicks at goal, Western Province won.
But early in the second half Jayden Seekoei goaled a penalty to give the Free Staters a 3-0 lead, But when Free State kicked downfield into the Western Province half scrumhalf Bradley de Jongh counterattacked. Fullback Curtly Clayton, who was always willing to run, carried on with speed and when the ball came to centre Marwin Jacobs he scored near the posts to put Western Province ahead 5-3.
The Free State had had chances to score throughout the match but too often their handling let them down, but when Western Province played wide left their hands were excellent and big left wing Marco Tregonning sped down the touchline, getting away from two attempted tackles and scoring behind the posts. This time De Jongh converted.
Free State had a long period of attack close to the Western Province line, especially after Dillon Kalmeyer was sent off for a second yellow card, the first for a late tackle, the second for dissent. But the 14-man home side held out, partly because of the Free State's fragile handling and partly because the Western Province did not miss tackles. At one stage Free State were held up over the line.
The team called Green Smile was a late entry after KwaZulu-Natal pulled out. The team was chosen from the Boland area. There were seven schools involved – Gansbaai, Swartberg, Albert Myburgh of Bredasdorp, Emil Weder of Genandendal, Groenberg. Hawston and Villiersdorp. Green Smile Foundation was founded by Ashwin Willemse and Breyton Paulse in 2012 and they are the force behind it. They threw their weight behind the team.
The referee for the final was 20-year-old Carl Broodryk, one of 26 members of the Western Province Referees' Society under the age of 21.
