Wynberg pip SACS at the post

Match report

As predicted by www.fnbclassicclashes.co.za Wynberg Boy’s High beat South African College High School (SACS) 8-3 at Wynberg on Saturday afternoon. In a reversal of the first round fixture once again it was the home team that triumphed.

SACS started better and went in to an early 3-nil lead thanks to a penalty by fullback Andrew Theron. As has been the case the whole season the SACS pack was more than up to the challenge. SACS’s Craven Week hooker Khotso Micha, captaining the team in his last game for the school was full of fire and with lock Kieran Snellink once again dominant in the air SACS was assured a surfeit of possession. SACS dominated possession and territory in the first half but were unable to convert the pressure into points. SACS have struggled the whole season the finish off their chances and once again it came back to haunt them on Saturday.

Wynberg drew level early in the second half thanks to a penalty kick from Stefan Swanich. Both teams had chances to draw further ahead, SACS having the easier of the kicks at posts. They will be kicking themselves that they did not convert them as if they had pulled ahead at this crucial stage they may have been able to close the game out. Wynberg were eventually able to finish the stronger of the two teams and were on top for the last 20 minutes. With 10 minutes remaining they scored a wonderful try to punctuate a rather dour affair. From a line-out near their own 22m-line they spun a simple skip pass to outside centre Swanich, who beat his opposite number. He ran 70 metres to score but was unable to convert his own try.

SACS threw everything at Wynberg in the last few minutes in an effort to win the game and end the season on a high but were unable to land the killer blow. SACS put up a gallant effort considering the number of injuries they had while Wynberg will look forward with great anticipation to the 2006 season as 11 of their current team is in Grade 11 (Std 9). For Wynberg their man-of-the-match was loosehead prop Grant Kemp who was industrious all day. He excelled in the tight while carrying the ball to the gain line with real aggression.
