Wynberg Slide Past SACS

Wynberg Boys’ High beat the South African College High School (SACS) for the third time in succession to claim a 15-7 win in their FNB Classic Clash.

As has almost become the norm the match was played in atrocious conditions and the two sets of players, whose jerseys are fairly similar as it is, were once again impossible to tell apart at the end. All one could see was mud!

It was always going to be a tight contest given the teams' form coming into the game and the conditions on the day. Derby games between arch-rivals always bring out the best in both sets of players.

Wynberg were the better side on the day and deserved their win. Their set piece functioned better, their pick-and-go work around the fringes had more thrust and their flyhalf Siya Alam made good use of his boot when required.

SACS competed well throughout and their team gave all they had on the day but it was not enough against a disciplined Wynberg team.

After SACS had missed an early chance to take the lead via a penalty Wynberg opened the scoring when after mauling and battering away in close they flipped the ball wide for right-wing Jihad Smith to score untouched. Fullback Karl Martin kicked the conversion and a penalty soon after to give Wynberg a 10-nil half-time lead.

The conditions made playing positive rugby virtually impossible but both teams deserve credit for trying.

Wynberg extended their lead when Alam capitalised on an error by SACS and kicked through for an opportunist try.

SACS scored a good set-piece try by centre Sebastian Roodt at the death but it was too little too late for the home team who will be looking forward to the return match with relish.
