Young talent remains in South Africa

The rumour mill turned at full speed during the 2016 Craven Week and some reports suggested French scouts were willing to fork out sums of up to €4,000 (ZAR63,241) to secure a signing.

However, out of all the players for SA Schools and the SA Schools A team only one Grey College lock, Jaco van Tonder, decided to continue his career in France at Montpellier next year.

There are also rumours that SA Schools and Paarl Gymnasium flank Muller Uys and Wian van Zyl is in negotiations with overseas clubs. But, both committed themselves for the first six months of next year to Western Province. Young talent remains in South Africa

The lack of interest amongst this year's top SA rugby school players in overseas clubs is a good phenomenon for the South African rugby fraternity but unfortunately for SA this would not put a damper on overseas club's pursuit for SA talent. Overseas clubs looking to sign up young players are not something new and the assault on next year's Craven Week and Academy W eek can be expected to be even bigger.

Western Province and the Golden Lions got the most signatures of the country's most talented players this year. WP attracted the Blue Bulls Craven Week captain and hooker Schalk Erasmus to Cape Town. Abner van Reenen from Hoërskool Garsfontein also heads to Cape Town and will complete his matric year at Paarl Boys.

SA Schools captain Salmaan Moerat along with front rowers Johan Adam Neethling and Reece Bezuidenhout will remain in Cape Town.

Western Province's brightest young stars – fullback Gianni Lombard, centre Manuel Ras and No.8 Khanya Ncusane – are all heading to the Golden Lions next year. The SA Schools A team captain Louritz van der Schyff, along with his fellow Affies Arno van Wyk, Jack Hart and Phillip Krause also decided to continue their careers at the Golden Lions. Jeppe's Hacjivah Dayimane, Wandisile Simelane and Tyrone Green will continue remain at the Golden Lions.
