Queen's College in big win

The Queen’s College 1st XV bounced back after their loss in East London two weeks ago, to record an emphatic 54 – 5 victory over a flat footed Hudson Park side on the Rec on Saturday afternoon.

In an interesting contrast to their usual style of play, much less driving play was to be seen from the Queen’s forwards, with plenty of good ball going the way of the backline, allowing them to score a number of well worked tries out wide. Left wing Sbura Sithole was prominent and was rewarded with three good tries.

The Queen’s pack of forwards gave a fine display of scrumming and had their opposition in all sorts of trouble in almost every set piece. Their line-out work was, however, not up to scratch and will require some attention before their next outing.

The first half was characterized by some enterprising passages of play by Queen’s resulting in four good tries scored by left wing Sithole, eighthman Mbuyisa Mnci and scrumhalf Rodger Bowren, who scored twice. Flyhalf Lionel Cronje was on target with all four conversions.

Hudson scored their only points in the dying stages of the first half following a number of crashes on the Queen’s try line, with centre Isaac Mbelani on hand to receive the final pass to score. The half time scored was 28 – 5 in Queen’s College’s favour.

During the second half the quality of the Queen’s’ play deteriorated. Despite scoring four additional tries, they played with less cohesion and conceded a number of penalties thereby losing the initiative. Hudson Park played with more determination opting to keep the ball amongst the forwards during this half, with eighthman Jarrid Els making the hard yards for his team.

Second half tries for Queen’s were scored by locks Bulelani Mbuqe and Samuel Borsah and Sbura Sithole (2).
