SACS too strong for Strand

Playing their last away game of the season, SACS comfortably overcame Strand High in clear but windy and cold conditions. The final score was 19-0, but SACS would have disappointed not to have racked up at least another four tries such was their overall dominance.

Playing with the strong breeze in the first half one felt SACS would need at least a fifteen point cushion at the interval. Strand played structured rugby but managed to venture into SACS territory only once towards the end of the half. SACS camped in Strand’s half and laid siege on their line but poor finishing meant they scored only twice. Their first try saw the forward rumble over in the corner, while the second was an intercept by Dean Holland. Chad Moolman converting the second try.

In tandem with centre partner Aaron Jacobs, Moolman had a great game and they breached the Strand defence on numerous occasions. Moolman could probably scored twice himself but both times chose to pass with the line at his mercy. Those were two of the many tries that SACS left on the table.

Given the strength of the wind one felt that twelve points may not be enough. That said though SACS, with their ball in hand approach, have played well into the wind this season. Fortunately that trend continued and SACS proceeded to dominate the second half as they did the first. Flyhalf Tim Carr used the odd kick for position but generally SACS carried the ball to their opponents. The forwards, who again scrummed excellently, doing the hard yards and the backs moving the ball around well. It must be said though that this was a poor performance by Strand, on par with their disappointing showing at SACS last year when they did take a forty point battering.

For all their constructive play though SACS’s third and final try was also somewhat opportunist. Right-wing Matthieu Theron pouncing onto a loose ball and scything though the Strand defence to score under the sticks.

Overall though, despite the poor finishing at times, it was a very pleasing performance from SACS. They will be looking to build on this performance as they move into the final three games of the season. All at home and against our traditional rivals, starting with Bishops on Thursday morning.
