Schools Results - 28 April
This is a long, long weekend. It is amazing how a long weekend in South Africa can always be made longer! If Tuesday is a holiday, Monday becomes one, too.
Doc Craven used to lament that South Africa was a “land of holiday makers”.
As a result, even though the season has just started, many schools had off. There are still some results.
This week we shall weigh up the results we have so far and try to come up with our first Top 20 of 2007.
Probably the big result of the weekend was Paul Roos’s victory over Affies, played in Stellenbosch and in the rain. Despite the rain it was a match of high quality. Paul Roos scored three tries to two, the winning try scored just before the end.
Another big result was Diamantveld’s two-try victory over the strong Boland Landbou side in Kimberley.
There were big ones north of the Vaal as well – for Monnas, Nellies, Erries, Klofies and Eldoraigne.
The astonishing result was Grey College’s huge win over Maritzburg College who had such success in New Zealand.
The saddest non-event was the match between Grey and Framesby in Port El;izabeth. The notoriously unpleasant state of rugby in the Eastern Province manifested itself this time in a stand-off between the newly elected Eastern Province RFU and the schools union and in particular its chairman Willem October. October then refused to allow members of the EP Referees’ Society to referee schools matches. All for the good of the game, no doubt!
If there are other results, they can be sent to pauld@365digital.co.za.
