Selborne come good in FNB Classic
Match report
Selborne College of East London spoilt Grey High of Port Elizabeth's unbeaten record in their FNB Classic Clash in East London on Saturday afternoon. It was the last match of the season for both sides. Selborne won 20-11.
Selborne have been having an erratic season which has slid away lately but on this day they ;played their best of the while year. coming into the match with great determination.
Grey were in search of their first unbeaten first team since 1976. Playing in the match was Jarryd Neale-May whose father was in that 1976 side. Son Jarryd was playing for Selborne!
It was a match which Selborne deserved to win, if only because they scored two tries to one. Their loose forwards played their best rugby of the year and the side won good possession at scrums and line-outs. The Selborne defence was outstanding.
Grey are without their captain – Simon Westraadt and also Kirwan Frieslaar who are playing for the SA Academy team which beat SA Schools at Ellis Park in a curtainraiser to the Tri-Nations match between South Africa and New Zealand. They have been without players before but have done well despite that as the team has great depth.
Selborne scored first when scrumhalf Rory Kockott kicked a penalty after just four minutes.
In the 20th minute Grey got back on even terms through a penalty by Warren Bell, but on the stroke of half-time flank Michael Green scored a try for Selborne which Rory Kockott converted.
The home side led 10-3 at half-time.
Warren Bell kicked his second penalty early in the second half but almost straight afterwards Rory Kockott charged down a kick and scored a try which he converted. 17-6.
Grey then had a sustained attack and created space for right wing Peter Furstenburg who scored. 17-11.
Just before the end Rory Kockott kicked his second penalty to make the final score 20-11.
It was a good match on a good day of rugby in excellent weather – cool but still after the heavy mist of the night before.
