Schools Top 20 - 29 May 2019
RANKINGS: There were fewer matches this past weekend, what with exams and Craven Week preparations.
Of last week’s Top 20 teams, six did not play at all. One of those who did not play is the No.1 side, but then Grey College has already played 11 matches this season. The others who did not play were Rondebosch, Bishops, Outeniqua – whose fixture was cancelled, Glenwood and Diamantveld.
The results of the top five schools who did play were:
Paarl Gim vs SACS, 41-19
Paarl Boys’ High vs Paul Roos, 29-16
Framesby vs Marlow, 59-0
The big match was between Paul Roos (3) and Paarl Boys’ High (4), which Boys’ High won convincingly, so the two have swapped places. Unbeaten Framesby had a big win but against a struggling side.
In the next big match in the Top 20 context, Garsfontein beat Menlopark, a good result for Garsies but then an expected one as they were ranked sixth, while Menlopark was 10th.
The relevant results in this group are:
Garsfontein vs Menlopark, 46-28
Monument vs Transvalia, 92-12
Affies vs Jeppe, 47-28
The outstanding result in the next group is the KES victory over Waterkloof, Top 20 team over Top 20 team. Add in Grey PE’s big victory and we have moved Grey and KES up and Menlopark down.
KES vs Waterkloof, 29-12
Grey PE vs Daniël Pienaar, 71-7
It would be harsh to move Waterkloof down as the two sides immediately below them did not play and the next two teams lost.
Selborne vs St Andrew’s, 28-12
We move Selborne up and St Andrew’s down after this result and then comes a big move. Last week we dropped Boland Landbou but you can’t keep a good man down, they say, and their substantial win over Stellenberg has brought them back.
Boland Landbou vs Stellenberg, 51-38
These five winners were also in the pressure group. They all won, but not against a Top 20 side or a team also in the pressure group.
Dale vs Grens, 33-20
Helpmekaar vs Noordheuwel, 33-25
Northwood vs St Benedict’s, 36-20
Westville vs Maritzburg College, 28-26
Wynberg vs Hugenote, 26-9
And so we have a new list that is not much changed.
