While the executive of the Western Province Rugby Union are fighting fires on several off-field fronts – including a recent racial incident at the Cape Town Sevens and a long-standing court battle with Aerios – on the field they have been relatively successful.

Having won four of the six national domestic competitions – the Currie Cup, the Provincial Rugby Challenge, Under-21 Championship title and the national club championship – there was some reward for the embattled union.

WP's Currie Cup-winning coach John Dobson and all his lieutenants gave been rewarded with contract extensions.

Dobson, assistant and backline coach Dawie Snyman, defence coach Norman Laker and technical analyst Human Kriek have all signed on for another three years.

Dobson said he was pleased that the WP Rugby Union recognised the collective effort and rewarded their success.

"I have worked with Dawie [Snyman], Norman [Laker] and Human [Kriek] for a long time," Dobson told rugby365 in an interview from the United Kingdom.

"[I am] grateful to [WPRU President] Thelo Wakefield and [CEO] Gert Smal for rewarding [and showing] faith in us," he added.

The seasoned coach, who previously won Vodacom Cup and age-group titles with WP, felt the on-field success of 2017 shows there is plenty of life left at the Western Cape union.

"We have had reasonable success at this union this year," Dobson told rugby365, adding: "We have won four out of a possible six trophies.

"We are all grateful for the opportunity to carry on working here.

"The future is quite exciting."
