Beast joins Sharks' board of directors
NEWS: Sharks have confirmed that Springboks legend Tendai Mtawarira had been appointed to its Board of Directors.
Mtawarira, who is the most capped front-row player in South African international rugby (having played 117 times for the Boks), will take one of the six seats on the Sharks (Pty) Ltd board of Directors.
Mtawarira bid farewell to his 11-year international career in style by lifting the Webb Ellis Cup as a World Cup winner in 2019.
According to the Sharks, Mtawarira’s appointment is internal as ‘he understands players needs and his voice is a crucial one at the boardroom table,”
In terms of the shareholding, 51 persent is now held by MVM Holdings, who recently acquired the stake in The Sharks, with the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union holding 26 percent and the remaining 23 percent held by Supersport.
The Board of Directors is led by our chairman Stephen Saad, who as the founder and group CEO of JSE listed company Aspen Pharmacare is an astute businessman and great mind, who we have the honour of having lead our board.
The visionary Sharks CEO Eduard Coetzee is an Executive Director on the board.
Representing MVM Holdings is the highly successful internationally acclaimed lawyer Marco Masotti.
The other seats are filled by Shaun Bryans, Hendrick Goosen and CEO of Jonsson Workwear, Nick Jonsson.
The fifth seat is occupied by Phathokuhle Zondi, the former CEO of the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town, who has the distinct honour of being the first female to sit on The Sharks Board of Directors.
The Sharks releases an officials statement which read the new board is an aid to ‘fulfil the vision of inclusivity and diversity,’

Former Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl represents the KZNRU alongside Demetris Haralambous and Sandile Ngwenya, while Supersport is represented by Marc Jury and Grahams Abrahams along with long-standing independent board member Terry Rosenberg.
As a sporting body and a business, the Sharks have tapped deeply into the intellectual capital they have attracted in their quest to be not only a globally recognised brand but a highly-respected one.
The Sharks explained: “This board represents the best rugby and business brains available and can only add to what the Sharks team is building towards on the pitch as the rugby landscape enters new horizons and speaks to and attracts new audiences in the northern hemisphere and beyond,”
