Bulls' one-squad system hits stumbling block
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The Bulls’ one -squad for the United Rugby Championship and Currie Cup may face a major stumbling block in June.
The Bulls Director of Rugby Jake White’s decision to play the URC and Currie Cup with one squad was accompanied by loads of scrutiny.
Stormers, Lions and Sharks all opted for two squad systems, which has been the ‘popular’ option.
However, with the URC and Currie Cup reaching their final stages, it seems like White’s plan has been proven fruitful.
The Bulls secured a place in the URC quarterfinals and a spot in Europes’s Champions Cup last weekend.
They are also top of the Currie Cup standings.
“The vision that Jake White has, it’s fantastic,” Bulls defence coach Pine Pienaar told reporters.
“There is synergy in the whole group.
“We have basically one plan and everybody at the union is on one page.
“I think it doesn’t matter which team is fielded for which tournament, everyone has one goal and it is especially beneficial for next year – it really works for us.”
Pienaar further explained why the plan has been so functional.
“The players and management had a clear plan and everyone was informed ahead of time.
“And I really have to commend the players for buying into it.
“Playing on a Wednesday, followed by a Saturday is difficult.
“But the players looked after themselves and hopefully we as management and the players can finish the season strong.”

The Bulls still have some work to do before booking a place in the Currie Cup semifinal.
The side host the Griquas this weekend as one of four league matches before the play-offs phase, which is scheduled for June 18.
Given their current form, the Bulls are expected to feature in the semifinals and possible the Final of the Currie Cup.
However, Pienaar revealed that the one-squad system could face a major challenge should the franchise make it to the URC Final, which is scheduled on June 18.
“We are in a very extraordinary position,” Pienaar said, adding: “We have four Currie Cup games left starting against a quality Griquas side and then it’s the Cheetahs in the last round of league matches before the semifinals and Final which Jake White and Gert Smal will plan.
“Obviously the challenge will be the URC semifinal and Final, which will be overseas.
“But currently we are just looking this weekend regarding our planning for the Currie Cup.”
The Bulls will host the Griquas this Saturday at Loftus Versfeld, followed by a clash against the Lions on May 14.
The Bulls have a two-week URC break before heading to Wales to face the Ospreys in the last round of the league on May 2
