Griquas suspends player 'arrested for violence '
NEWS: The Griqualand West Rugby Union has suspended a professional player arrested for violence earlier this week.
The union confirmed the arrest of Kudzwai Dube, for alleged violent behaviour and assault at a liquor store.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, April 29, in Kariega in the Eastern Cape, has shocked and deeply saddened the Griqualand West Rugby community.
“As an organization committed to upholding the values of integrity, respect, and sportsmanship, we do not condone any form of violence or aggressive behaviour, both on and off the field,” GWRU CEO Arni van Rooyen said in a statement.
Kudzwai Dube, a former Blue Bulls Under-21 captain who joined Griquas towards the latter part of 2021, has been an integral part of the team.
“We are deeply disappointed by these allegations,” Van Rooyen said.
“We understand the seriousness of the situation and cooperate fully with the local authorities in their investigation.
“Kudzwai Dube has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities pending further investigation and legal proceedings.
“The Union will also be conducting an internal review to determine the appropriate course of action.
“We extend our sincerest apologies to anyone affected by this unfortunate incident.
“Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
“As an organization, we remain committed to promoting a culture of respect, responsibility, and accountability among our players and staff.
“We will continue to uphold the highest standards of conduct and ensure that incidents like these are not tolerated within our Union.”
GWRU asked, on behalf of Kudzwai Dube’s family, that the media respect the family’s privacy as they navigate through this challenging situation.
“Griqualand West Rugby Union remains dedicated to fostering a positive and inclusive environment for all members of our community, both on and off the field,” Van Rooyen added.
