Currie Cup Final history snippets
Year and there down the years
The first Currie Cup Final was played in 1939, at Newlands when Transvaal beat Western Province. That was the last time Western Province lost a final at Newlands.
There have been ten Currie Cup Finals at Newlands. Western Province have won seven, two have been drawn and then there was the defeat in 1939.
There have been Currie Cup Finals at eight different cities/towns and at 10 different venues. Loftus Versfeld has played host to most – 16 in all, of which the Blue Bulls (Northern Transvaal) have won 13.
Cities/towns: Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Wellington, Durban, Kimberley, Springs, Bloemfontein.
Venues: Newlands, Loftus Versfeld, Ellis Park, Boland Stadium, Kingsmead and King's Park, De Beers, Pam Brink, Free State Stadium and Springbok Park. (The names have not always been stable.)
Of the 45 finals, the home team has won 25, the away team 17 and three have been drawn.
The venue for the final used to be determined by seniority or by where the final was last played between the two teams involved. Now the team that finishes higher on the log gets the final.
In the three draws so far (1971, 1979 and 1989), the trophy was shared. Now, in the event of a draw , extra time of ten minutes each way will be played. If the teams are still drawn at the end of extra time, the Currie Cup will be shared.
In Bloemfontein, scene of the 2006 final, Free State/Cheetahs have won oneand lost three. They lost to Northern Transvaal/Blue Bulls twice..
Natal have won the Currie Cup Final four times, but only one of those victories has been at home. They thus have the best away record. Natal’s only home victory was over Western Province, in 1995. That means one home victory in five attempts.
