Lions captain Jantjies heads to France
TRANSFER NEWS: Springboks flyhalf Elton Jantjies has been given the opportunity to leave the Lions.
The Johannesburg franchise released an official statement confirming that Jantjies will join the French club Pau as a medical joker.
Jantjies who has been linked with a move to France since 2019, will join the Pau on loan in preparations for the British and Irish Lions Series.
Given the lengthy injury to flyhalf Handre Pollard, Jantjies has been regarded as the first choice to don the flyhalf jersey when South Africa play against the British and Irish Lions in June.
Jantjies’ loan to Pau means that Lions will have to rely on experienced Fred Zeilinga and utility back Tiaan Swanepoel for the upcoming European Rainbow Cup followed by the Currie Cup.
The Lions’ official statement read: “Upon request from Elton Jantjies and in conjunction with SA Rugby, Lions Rugby Company has released the player for an opportunity as a medical joker with French club Pau in preparation for the British & Irish Lions.
“LRC and SA Rugby are in communication with Elton post the opportunity granted,”
