Lions have a new coach

NEWS: The Golden Lions have a new coach – the latest in a batch of new emanating from Ellis Park.

The Lions revealed that Ivan van Rooyen has been appointed Currie Cup coach.

Van Rooyen, the Lions’ fitness coach for the last six years, replaces Swys de Bruin as head coach of the Currie Cup squad.

He will be assisted by Philip Lemmer (who became the forwards coach for the 2018 Super Rugby season), Joey Mongalo (defence coach in 2018’s march to a third successive Super Rugby Final) and Neil de Bruin (attack coach).

In addition, Van Rooyen will receive input and consultation from De Bruin, who is away on national duty with the Springboks for the duration of the Rugby Championship.

The Lions open their Currie Cup campaign at home against Griquas on Friday, August 24.
