NEWS: The Bulls have managed to secure the services of one of South Africa’s greatest scrumhalves.

Blue Bulls Rugby Union President Willem Strauss revealed that World Cup-winning Springbok Fourie du Preez will join the team for another stint in an ‘advisory’ capacity.

The announcement came ahead of the Bulls’ opening of their Currie Cup defence, when they travel to Nelspruit to face the Pumas on Friday.

Du Preez made a significant contribution to the Bulls when he joined the back-to-back Currie Cup champions in 2020.

“[Director of Rugby] Jake [White] reached an agreement with Fourie du Preez to work once again with the scrumhalves in our system this season,” Strauss said.

“This is fantastic news for the No.9s in our squad,” the Bulls boss added.

White acknowledged the influence of Du Preez – widely acknowledged to have been the world’s premier scrumhalf for the better part of his 11-year career – during his previous stint.

Du Preez, now 39, played the last of his 76 Tests when he captained the Boks in the 18-20 semifinal World Cup loss at Twickenham, London, in 2015.

He also starred for Jake White’s Bok team in a 15-6 win over England in the 2007 World Cup Final.

As he did during his previous stint, Du Preez will have periodic sessions with the scrumhalves in the Currie Cup and United Rugby Championship squads.
