Bulls running out of coaching options

NEWS: The Blue Bulls Rugby Union’s coaching ‘short-list’ has just become even shorter.

Jimmy Stonehouse has formally withdrawn from the race to coach the Bulls next year.

The Super Rugby coaching position became vacant when John Mitchell took up a post as Eddie Jones’ defence coach at England.

Stonehouse, who is the Director of Rugby at Mpumalanga Rugby Pty (Ltd), was on a shortlist that also included Lions coach Swys de Bruin and Western Province mentor John Dobson.

Victor Matfield, one of the early favourites, appears to one of the few remaining candidates, as Fourie du Preez had withdrawn from the race some time ago.

However, Stonehouse – in a statement – said the numerous delays with the appointment and uncertainty surrounding the coaching structures, played a major role in his decision to step away from the Bulls.

“I understand that the Bulls have to make the right decision and that is why they are not in a hurry,” said.

“While I would have been available – and my availability was confirmed by the Pumas board – I can’t have my bread buttered on both sides.

“I have thus decided to stay with the Pumas.”
