Griquas reveal new coach
NEWS: Griquas have announced the appointment of Pieter Bergh as their new head coach for 2022.
Bergh, formerly the coach of CUT in the Varsity Cup competition, has signed a three-year contract.
Griquas CEO Arni van Rooyen believes Bergh is the perfect replacement for his predecessor Scott Mathie, who is set for a career move abroad.
Mathie has been linked to a position in America.
“We feel very fortunate to have Pieter back in our structures as he knows Kimberley and, more importantly, the game of rugby well,” said Van Rooyen.
“After a very successful 2021 season, we need a head coach who is capable of taking the team to the next level and we feel that Pieter is the right man to do so.”
Van Rooyen lauded Mathie and his assistant Albert van der Berg for guiding Griquas to the semifinals of the Currie Cup and for leaving the team in a better state than they found it.
Van der Berg will join up with the Lions ahead of the United Rugby Championship.
“They came in at a difficult time and did extremely well with the team,” Van Rooyen said.
“They can be very proud of what they achieved and will be sorely missed by everyone at Griquas.”
