Lions could get key players back

INJURIES: It’s probably running it too close before a possible play-off, but the Lions are hoping to have clarity on the grade one tear of Sti Sithole’s major (right) pec muscle.

The prop is recovering well from the injury and will be reassessed next Monday – two days before the Lions’ crucial last league outing in the Currie Cup competition against the Bulls at Loftus on Wednesday, January 6.

The Round Five match between the two teams – which was originally scheduled for Saturday, December 26 – was postponed to January 6 because of infections in the Bulls squad.

The Lions face the Pumas in Nelspruit on Saturday ahead of that match.

With their scrum going well enough, even considering that they play against the Bulls, coach Ivan van Rooyen will probably not risk Sithole before the probable play-offs.

Meanwhile, Lions’ Springbok wing Jamba Ulengo, who has a grade three MCL tear, could also be ready in a week and may be able to face the Bulls if needed.

Centre/fullback EW Viljoen has a grade two (left) hamstring and is in non-contact training.
