No game-time: Cronje rushing home
Journeyman Lionel Cronjé is heading back to South Africa, because of a lack of game-time with the Canberra-based Brumbies.
Cronje will now make Durban his home in his bid to get a clean-sweep of all South African Super Rugby teams.
The versatile back has first signed by the Cheetahs in 2009, but played no games. He then moved to the Stormers in 2010, playing seven games and an additional 21 for Western Province.
A move to the Blue Bulls followed in 2012 (four games), then the Golden Lions in 2013 (11 games).
The 25-year-old then moved to the Brumbies this year where played three games off the bench early this season when Christian Lealiifano was injured.
Cronjé's move to the Sharks for the Currie Cup has been a bit of a spontaneous decision for the South African.
“With the Brumbies losing this week my plans may have changed, I’m waiting to hear what’s happening," Cronje said.
Cronje is hoping a return home will kick-start his Super Rugby dream.
“With Christian and Matt Toomua signed up [with Brumbies] for another two years, game time was going to be hard for me, and my goal is to play Super Rugby."
“I’m fortunate I got to play in Canberra, and really happy I’ve got the chance to go home and hopefully achieve that dream of mine."
The Sharks boast a fairly strong Currie Cup team with the flyhalf berth occupied by the likes of last year's hero, Fred Zeilinga and youngster Tim Swiel.
