Prinsloo boots Griquas to victory

Griquas recorded their second win of the season when they hung on against a late-charging Pumas team for a 31-27 victory in Kimberley on Saturday.

Fullback Gouws Prinsloo kicked eight penalties and a conversion to seal the win for the home team, despite the Pumas outscoring Griquas by two tries to one.

Prinsloo slotted three penalties, as Griquas dominated the first half-hour, before two quickfire penalties by Pumas flyhalf Justin van Staden made it 9-6 just pas the half-hour mark.

Prinsloo made it 12-6 with his fourth penalty, before Reynier van Rooyen scored the first try of the match – as the Pumas narrowed the gap to just one point (11-12) with just on two minutes left in the first half.

However, the home team had the final say before the break, with Petrus Vermeulen going over for Griquas' first try – making it 19-11 to Griquas at the break.

The yo-yo nature of the game continued in the second half.

Prinsloo and Van Staden exchanged early penalties, before Prinsloo kicked two more penalties – the score moving on to 28-14.

A great try from midfielder Jacobus Jonker, followed by a conversion and a penalty from Van Staden, saw the gap narrow to just four points (24-28).

Prinsloo gave his team some breathing space with a penalty (31-24), before Juan Roos narrowed the gap to 27-31 with five minutes to go.

Griquas hung on in the final five minutes to claim a vital win.

Griquas started well, with Prinsloo giving his side an early lead via a penalty in the third minute.

What ensued after that was a hard, physical match where neither team gave an inch.

Prinsloo was again called into action in the 21st minute and kicked another solid penalty to give Griquas a hard fought lead of just six points. He repeated the feat just three minutes later to give the Kimberley based side a nine point lead.

It took them almost an half an hour, but the Pumas finally got on the score board when fly half Justin van Staden succeeded with a penalty with ten minutes left in the first half.

A minute later Van Staden reduced Griquas lead to three points as it became evident that the result would depend on who would be the better kicker on the day.

Prinsloo and Van Staden exchanged penalties once again before Pumas scrum half Reynier van Rooyen burst through for the first try of the afternoon.

Van Staden could not convert, but it gave the Pumas the lead for a short while.

On the stroke of half time, Griquas winger PJ Vermeulen broke the tackle and dotted down with Prinsloo converting to give the hosts a half time lead of 19-11.

Prinsloo started the second half with his fifth penalty kick of the afternoon after which he and Van Staden continued to trade penalties.

Prinsloo thereafter kicked his seventh penalty of the day to give the Griquas a solid lead.

The Pumas kept on fighting and center JW Jonker hit back with his five pointer, which Van Staden converted to bring the visitors back within seven points.

He narrowed the gap even more when he kicked another penalty, echoed by Prinsloo minutes later to give Griquas some breathing space.

Six minutes from full time, replacement fly half JC Roos kicked a penalty to bring the Pumas within four points, but Griquas defence held out the last couple of minutes to secure only their second victory of the competition.
