Sharks wary of wounded Lions
Sharks coach John Plumtree is expecting a fierce onslaught from the embattled Golden Lions when the teams meet in a repeat of last year’s Currie Cup final on Saturday.
The Lions’ dire off-field situation on Thursday reached its climax when the South African Rugby Union confirmed that the Johannesburg side will play no part in the 2013 Super Rugby season and that their place will be taken by the Southern Kings.
The news follows the controversial suspension of coach John Mitchell and sacking of assistant coaches Carlos Spencer and Wayne Taylor.
Amidst the chaos, Plumtree said he expects the Golden Lions players will not be hampered by the recent developments on the playing field and will provide the hosts with a stern challenge.
“We don't really care what's going on there (at the Lions),” Plumtree said. “Our business is on the field and we know they'll be a real handful for us, so we'll have to be very accurate in all areas.”
Plumtree said in contrast to the Sharks, who have lost several players to national duty, the Golden Lions have the luxury of fielding a settled and near full-strength side.
“They're fortunate that they don't lose too many players to the Boks," Plumtree said.
"In fact, they have some players back from injury to boost them, so they look in really good shape.
“They have a very experienced forward pack and at the back Butch James is obviously a key player for them.”
