Smith offered Free State job
The Cheetahs have offered Varsity Cup winning Shimlas coach, Franco Smith, the Currie Cup job at the Free state side for 2015.
Ryno Opperman, the Chairman of the board of directors of the Free State Cheetahs, confirmed that there had been discussions with Smith and that an offer will be made to him in conjunction with the Shimlas.
In this process, Rory Duncan (Currie Cup head coach in 2014) will be promoted to Director of Rugby.
Last year, usual Currie Cup coach Naka Drotske, was relieved of the Currie Cup duties in order to pick up some coaching experience overseas.
This year, it seems that the Cheetahs would again like to free Drotske up over the Currie Cup period.
In his new role, Duncan will oversee all rugby activities. These include rugby structures, coaching teams, rugby strategies, academy and junior rugby, medical facilities and the gymnasium.
Smith has already been contracted as an assistant coach for the 2015 Currie Cup season.
"An offer has now been made to Franco as Currie Cup head coach for 2015 competition," Opperman said in a statement to rugby365.
"We are aware of another offer that has been made to him.
"The offer of the Cheetahs, in cooperation with Shimlas, is a very good one, and is more than market-related.
"If Franco decided not to accept the offer, we can say with certainty that Free State and Shimlas rugby have done everything possible to keep his services, and have taken his coaching needs and conditions into account.
"Free State Rugby is very positive that Franco will accept the offer.
"He has indicated that he will make a decision within the next two weeks."
