VIDEO: Bulls' front row further depleted
INJURY UPDATE: The Blue Bulls’ front row woes have been compounded ahead of their Currie Cup Round Two encounter with the Free State Cheetahs.
The Bulls, who suffered the ignominy of a host of scrum penalties in their 5-20 loss to Western Province last Saturday, have lost another prop to injury.
Prop Matthys Basson left the field at Newlands with a Grade Three AC joint injury.
He will most likely be out for the remainder of the Currie Cup season and will consult with a specialist in Cape Town to determine the way forward.
The Bulls will look at Wiehahn Herbst, who withdrew on the morning of the match at Newlands to attend the birth of his child, to plug the gap left by left by Basson’s injury.
There are two other injuries from the loss at Newlands.
Flank Wian Vosloo injured his rib in the first half and was still in quite a bit of pain on Monday.
He will most likely not be available for selection this weekend.
Flank Roelof Smit hurt his neck and was sent off for a concussion test.
His neck was feeling a lot better on Monday and he passed the concussion test.
He should be back in training as of Tuesday.
On a positive note, scrumhalf Marco Jansen van Vuren has recovered fully from the surgery for his pectoral injury and started training on Monday.
However, the set-piece concerns will be coach Pote Human’s biggest headache.
The Cheetahs will also ask some tough questions of the Bulls’ barren front row – which appears to lack the depth to cover for the Springbok call-ups of Lizo Gqoboka, Schalk Brits and Trevor Nyakane.
