The Lions have been struggling in the Currie Cup.

They have yet to record a win this season and are currently occupying the bottom of the table.

The Gauteng side’s campaign does not get any easier as they head to Bloemfontein to face one of their most challenging opponents in the shape of the Cheetahs.

The Free State side are unbeaten and regarded as one of the favourites to secure the Currie Cup trophy.

“It is always a tough outing in Bloemfontein,” Lions forward coach Roux said.

“I’ve travelled there many years during my playing and coaching years and it is never easy.

“They [Cheetahs] have a very settled side, they are very well balanced. They have experienced guys [like Frans Steyn and Ruan Pienaar] who have won World Cups.

“Obviously we can’t control what the Cheetahs do but we can play the best rugby we can play.

“I think the boys are a little bit disappointed with their past performances but they have a lot of potential and quality.”

Roux added that despite recording only two wins in the URC and Currie Cup combined, the morale at the Union is not depleted.

“We are in the industry where winning is the only currency,” Roux said.

“We do have a young Currie Cup team, however, that should not be used as an excuse. I believe the guys are good enough to produce good rugby.

“I can’t speak for the URC, but as collective rugby union, we want to do better.

“So, the boys are feeling it but there is definitely not a giving up kind of attitude in the camp.

“I think we have to fix the small facets of the game and hopefully that will transfer into wins and change the vibe in the team.

“But we do know we need to fix it.”

He added: “As the forwards coach, my focus is on creating ball in either a scrum or line-out.”
