Cheetahs send injured Bok home

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Cheetahs coach Hawies Fourie confirmed that Springbok Frans Steyn will return to South Africa and miss the Challenge Cup Round Two match against Scarlets.

The Cheetahs returned to the international arena on a high note, recording a 21-16 win over Section Paloise in Pau last week.

However, the win came at a high cost.

Fourie revealed that veteran Springbok Frans Steyn, who started at fullback, pulled a hamstring.

He was replaced by Robert Ebersohn at the 50-minute mark.

The severity of the injury is not serious, Fourie revealed.

However, the Bok won’t feature in Saturday’s clash against Scarlets at the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi in Parma.

The coach has added Andell Loubser as a suitable replacement.

He will join the travelling squad in Italy.

“Frans will not be ready to play this weekend,” Fourie told reporters.

“It is not a serious hamstring injury but the doctor said he won’t be ready to play on Saturday so it’s better to send him home and start the rehab.

The Cheetahs may also take to the field without Teboho Mohoje, after he was cited for a dangerous tackle on Section Paloise centre Yvan Reilhac.

“I’m not sure we will get him off the hook,” Fourie said, adding: “He made contact to the face of [Reilhac] with his shoulder and the guy left the field with a shiner.

“The video footage we receive I’ve sent it to a high-profile referee and to someone who does the hearings and there is a bit of difference between the two.

“If you plead guilty that might reduce the sentence and give you only 50 percent which is only three games.

“And then there is the element called coaching interference where we’ve got to make videos and show World Rugby we have worked on his technique and that could reduce it to two games.”

“But it is 50/50 think we have to prove that it is yellow and not a red card offence.”

He added: “We as a coaching team felt Mohoje really played well, good work rate, physicality in the contact and good carries.

“So it will be a pity if he can’t play for us on Saturday.”
