Ruan Pienaar fit for Ulster clash

The South Africa scrumhalf returned to Belfast in a leg brace after their disappointing Pool five defeat at Bordeaux-Begles. But he looks set to be fit for the round two clash against Exeter Chiefs, who are also out to bounce back from a defeat to French opposition.

"We had really good news about Ruan earlier today," said Ulster head coach Les Kiss.

"The scan just showed a couple of things that you would expect with a jar on the knee.

"We'll just need to see how the next 24 or 48 hours go and then we'll take a decision but it looks very positive."

Ulster looked set to make a dream start to their Champions Cup campaign out in Bordeaux. They led 13-9 with less than 10 minutes remaining before it all unravelled at Stade Chaban-Delmas. Sébastien Taofifenua barged over at the corner before a searing break from Metuisela Talebulamaijaina earned a penalty try.

Blair Connor broke free to put the gloss on the hard-fought victory, and Kiss wants his men to put teams to the sword when they are in winning positions.

"If we put that try over the line, it's game over. We've got to be a little more clinical and desperate to win those moments. We were never going to put a big scoreline on them. We just gave them the access to our try-line for too long and when we tried to get out, we did it poorly a few times.

"That kept giving them a chance with their big forwards who hurt us," Kiss said.
