WRAP: Steyn double as Glasgow win at Newcastle
CHALLENGE CUP WRAP: Wing Kyle Steyn scored a try brace as Glasgow Warriors saw off a spirited Newcastle Falcons effort to reach the EPCR Challenge Cup quarter-finals with a 27-17 victory at Kingston Park on Friday.
The visitors never relinquished their lead after a dominant opening to the match, but having trailed 19-3 at half-time, Newcastle battled well in the second period.
Johnny Matthews and Josh McKay went over for Glasgow in addition to Steyn’s double, with Ross Thompson landing two conversions and a penalty.
Will Montgomery’s try, converted by Brett Connon, gave Newcastle hope at 19-10, but Glasgow proved too strong and too streetwise.
Joel Hodgson converted his own try on 66 minutes, but the damage had already been done and Glasgow could close out the victory without any major scares.
* Earlier, London Irish powered into the EPCR Challenge Cup quarterfinals after defeating Castres Olympique 64-27 in an extraordinary contest at Brentford Community Stadium.
Irish looked supremely comfortable in racking up a 40-3 half-time lead, but for much of the second period Castres threatened an incredible comeback.
The French side ran in 24 unanswered points before Theo Chabouni’s 70th-minute yellow card for a deliberate knock-on effectively ended their hopes in an immensely entertaining contest.
Alfie Barbeary starred with a hat-trick of tries as Wasps saw off a stubborn Biarritz Olympique 39-29 to reach the EPCR Challenge Cup quarter-finals.
Playing at No 8, the versatile forward went over twice in the first half his side dominated, but they did not seal victory until Barbeary completed his treble on 75 minutes.
Wasps appeared comfortable after reaching half-time 29-8 ahead, but Biarritz had other ideas.
