The evolution of Phepsi Buthelezi
SPOTLIGHT: Springbok loose forward Phepsi Buthelezi is embracing a “versatile” role in the Sharks squad as his team gears up for their first Champions Cup showdown of the season.
After a nervy 21-15 win over the Stormers in the United Rugby Championship last weekend, the Sharks will now welcome the struggling Exeter Chiefs to Durban.
Buthelezi made an appearance off the bench in that clash against the Capetonians and he offers head coach John Plumtree a variety of options in the back row.
While his primary position is No.8, the 25-year-old has shown that he can mix it up in the loose trio – a role he is enjoying at the moment.

“I wouldn’t say it makes my life difficult at all,” said Buthelezi.
“It’s actually a role that I’ve always had.
“In some games in the past, I would be starting but I will still be covering one or two other roles, so to me, it doesn’t change anything.
He added: “I am enjoying being versatile between the three positions.
“I think it is going to help me a lot going forward.
“I’m enjoying having a different role now and I think coming off the bench for the team has been a refreshing change for me. It’s something I want to become good at.”

Buthelezi’s solitary Test cap came against Portugal in July this year and on that day, Rassie Erasmus gave him the No.6 jersey.
“I was very happy with that. I enjoy playing openside,” the loose forward said.
“In fact, I don’t mind playing anyway – whether it’s openside, blindside or No.8.
“In recent years, I’ve had a lot of opportunities at No.8, which I’ve really enjoyed.
“As long as I’m on the field and as long as I’m able to contribute towards the team and get the desired result, the jersey I have on my back isn’t an issue for me.”
